SUMMARY:BOAD - A Bit of a Do - Convention 2024
DESCRIPTION:Six events across the day\nCornwall and West Cornwall Beekeepers Association are pleased to welcome beekeepers from across the South West to our convention. This year\, we have moved to the Camborne Learning Centre on the Pool campus of Cornwall College. Just off the A30\, it’s easy to find and has plenty of parking. We have presentations for the intermediate beekeeper through to the leading edge of academic research\, and a large exhibition space with traders and exhibitors from Beekeeping charities and other special interest groups associated with the craft. \nA chance to catch up\nIt’s always a pleasure to meet up with friends and colleagues to discuss all things apiary. The programme includes plenty of time and opportunity to do so over a convivial refreshment. Time too to browse for those specific books or items of beekeeping equipment that you always meant to get hold of. Oh\, and a chance to grab some raffle tickets for an array of beekeeping prizes. \nExhibitions and Trade Stands\nThere’s a large exhibition space located right by the main lecture area\, where we are delighted to welcome a wide range of exhibitions and Trade stands. \nGadget Competition\nTo celebrate the ingenuity of beekeepers in the South West\, we want to see how you have overcome the problems of beekeeping by devising a cunning solution to a beekeeping problem\, and we have so many! Perhaps you have a clever way of storing your equipment\, a well designed box or bag for carrying your bits and bobs\, a device for monitoring varroa\, a better hive tool\, a gadget for removing stings\, the most ingenious solar extractor or maybe your honey de-crystallising box. You get the idea? \nIf your gadget is not too big\, then bring it along. If it is not transportable\, then please bring along some photos. We would like to see any drawings you have made and perhaps some earlier prototypes. Of course you will need to write down what your gadget is for\, and how it works\, and if you have only brought photos\, some approximate dimensions. \nPlease label your gadget with your name and register it with Mark Hoult in the foyer of the Trelawney Building. \nThere is no charge for entry\, and you can bring along as many entries as you like. \nRoger Patterson will be judging the entries and the winner will receive a prize (as well as the admiration of fellow beekeepers). \nGood Luck! \nAnd\, being Cornwall\, Pasties!\nAs is our tradition\, pasties for lunchtime will be available to order in advance. New for this year is the ability to order a choice of pasties along with your ticket. Please note that pasty-included tickets will not be available after Sunday 29th September\, so that we can arrange with our suppliers. Admission only tickets will remain available up to the day. \nThe venue:\nWe’ve moved! This year we are in the Trelawney Building of the Cornwall College Campus\, Camborne. We’ve got more space\, bigger seating areas\, more parking and we’re all under one roof! Finding the venue is easy – the Campus is just off the A30 with the main entrance right by the landmark “FIBRE HUB” building on the A3047. Upon arrival at the Cornwall College Camborne campus\, please just follow the signs to our main reception\, located in the Trelawney building. Please use the Google plus code: 6PHF+48 Redruth

SUMMARY:Talk on the Cornish Black Bee - Rodger Dewhurst
DESCRIPTION:Speaker will be Rodger Dewhurst of Gwenen Apiaries\, Portreath. Rodger and his wife Carol have spent their life breeding and studying the Black Bee and have made many fascinating discoveries about this hardy\, productive and indigenous bee. \nWe are looking forward to this talk which will be free with tea and cake afterwards\, but we do invite donations to help with his expenses.  Any leftover donations will go in to the church funds . (new roof needed!) It’s a beautiful\, peaceful church with a warm and welcoming atmosphere\, very relaxed and informal. \nThe church carpark is large and level with plenty of easy parking. \nThe church is the isolated one standing on Church Lane\, several fields above Argal reservoir; quite a dramatic setting.

SUMMARY:Talk by Paul Boyle\, International Honey Judge
DESCRIPTION:Please come and join us on the evening of Saturday 11th February at The Stithians Centre for a lively and entertaining talk on how to prepare the products from your hive for showing.\nWe’ve been extremely fortunate that Paul Boyle\, the renowned International Honey Judge\, has offered to come and inspire beekeepers from all over Cornwall to enter local\, county and national honey shows. By talking about how to prepare our honey for showing\, as well as many of the other classes\, Paul will let us know what the judges are looking for and how we can best achieve winning entries.\nPaul started beekeeping in County Louth in 2007 and started entering honey shows in 2008. In 2013 not only did he qualify as a Beemaster but he also achieved two first prizes in the National Honey Show in London. In 2015 he was offered a place on the Executive Council of the National Honey Show\, the first Irish person in its illustrious history to to hold this post\, and he is also the trade hall co-ordinator for the National Honey Show. \nPaul qualified as an Irish Honey Judge in 2017\, having completed the stringent honey judging exams. In 2019 he was accepted as an Apimondia Honey Judge and is currently the chairperson of Louth Beekeepers Association in Co.Louth. \nAn amazing fact about Paul is that he has entered and achieved first prize in every class in a honey show – yes\, even the embroidery!\nWe are very fortunate to have someone of Paul’s experience and skill to come and share his knowledge with us FOR FREE!\nThe doors will be open at 7pm and the talk will start at 7.30pm prompt.
